American University: Cuban Politics and Society: Examine the political impact of the Cuban Revolution on U.S.- Cuban relations; political conflict in Latin America; and race, gender, and class relations in contemporary Cuba. Appalachian State University: An opportunity to earned six credits in a cooperative program between Appalachian State University and the the University of Havana. Students will enroll in two Cuban history courses (The Cuban Republic and The Cuban Revolution) presented primarily by Dr. Jose Tabares del Real (University of Havana)and may choose to participate in an optional conversational Spanish course taught by members of the University of Havana. faculty. The Cuban Republic and The Cuban Revolution courses will feature eight special guest speakers including prominent Cuban historians, economists, academics, and front commanders from the Cuban Revolution as well as biweekly excursions to museums, cultural sites, hospitals, and planned communities. Butler University Institute for Study Abroad: This is the first semester-long program at the Universidad de La Habana in which U.S. students are directly enrolled in regular university classes with Cuban students. The Universidad de La Habana gives students the opportunity enroll in regular semester courses. Students also live in regular university housing along with both Cuban and other international students. Center for Cross Cultural Study: Experience the blend of cultures - African, European and American - that form Cuba. Take classes from native Cuban faculty at the Universidad de La Habana and participate in an array of cultural activities and study trips designed to encourage direct interaction with the Cuban people. Students are lodged in hotels. Earn up to 16 credits. Program licensed by the U.S. Government and sponsored by Willamette University. CC-CS and the Facultad de Artes y Letras (Liberal Arts College) of the University of Havana offer students a special selection of courses in Spanish language, Cuban Literature, history, government, sociology and the arts. Council-International Study Programs: Council Study Center Universidad de La Habana: This program is designed for advanced speakers of Spanish from a variety of disciplines who are interested in participating in Cuban life and learning more about this culturally, politically and economically fascinating nation located so close to the United States yet so distinct in its approach to development and progress. The program also offers wonderful opportunities, in the classroom and in the community, for students to interact with Cubans and live in a rapidly changing and contrast-filled Latin American city. Cuban Research Institute: The CRI was established in 1991 by the Provost of Florida International University (FIU) upon the recommendation of a faculty committee, so as to fulfill, in the area of Cuban and Cuban-American Studies, the University’s three-fold mission: research, teaching, and service. As the largest institution of public higher education in southern Florida, FIU (a part of the State University System of Florida) has unique obligations and opportunities in developing Cuba-related programs. To accomplish its mission, the CRI develops academic programs in a wide range of areas: support for faculty and graduate student research; organization of conferences, seminars, lectures, and symposia; community outreach through the sponsorship of events (lectures, exhibitions, etc.) of special interest to the community; facilitate the participation of faculty experts in the public discussion, media coverage, and public policy formulation on issues regarding Cuba and the Cuban-American community; enrich the educational experience offered to undergraduate and graduate students at the University, especially through the expansion of course offerings on Cuba or Cuban Americans; nurture the growth in the number of faculty at the University with expertise in Cuban and Cuban American Studies; publications; make FIU an important international and national hub of scholarly activity in relation to Cuba and its Diaspora; assist in the development of the Cuba-related holdings and collections of the University Library. Eastern Michigan University: Latin America Cultural History Tour: Like EMU's Cultural History Tours in other regions, this program combines an extensive tour of major cultural and historical sites in southern Mexico, Cuba (Havana, Santiago de Cuba), and Guatemala with intense academic study of the history and political development of those areas. Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba : Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba (MEDICC) offers electives and rotations in Cuba for U.S. and Canadian students in medicine and the health sciences. The four to eight-week courses include community-based clinical experience and field work, and "Spanish for Health Professionals" is integrated into each course. Other MEDICC programs, designed to facilitate cooperation and dialogue between health professionals in the U.S. and Cuba, include the Medical Literature Project (providing 60 U.S. medical journals to the National Medical Library, Havana); Professional Bridges (sponsoring travel of U.S. and Cuban medical educators and specialists between the two countries); and MEDICC Review (an on-line journal of current Cuban medical research in English). School for International Training: Culture, Identity, and Community: Based in Havana, this program examines Cuba's unique cultural heritage, the formation of Cuban identity, and the centuries-old struggle for independence and autonomy. Student Exchange between Cuba and America : The Student Exchange between Cuba and America (SECA) is a US-based organization that implements educational exchanges between Cuba and the United States. The organization, founded in 1998 by David Mericle and Jacob Kitzman in Madison, WI, USA, is run exclusively by and for students. SECA currently has one exchange project between Madison and Camagüey, Cuba. SECA can provide support in establishing student exchange programs and other educational, technological and people-to-people links between the US and Cuba. We work with schools and sister city associations, helping you create your own exchange. SECA works with the Madison-Camagüey Sister City Association and is the youth arm of the US-Cuba Sister City Association. SUNY Buffalo: Cuba: Comprehending the Socialist City: This one-month summer program is open to undergrad and grad students enrolled at any US college. Participants will earn 6.0 University at Buffalo credit hours by completing two courses. This interdisciplinary program changes its academic focus each summer to incorporate a variety of fields, such as architecture, art, education, literature, Spanish language, and many others. Tulane University: Summer in Cuba: Study and live in Havana for three weeks this summer. The Tulane University Cuban Studies Institute's Summer in Cuba Program provides a rare opportunity for students to explore and understand Cuban society and culture firsthand in an academic setting. University of Connecticut, College of Continuing Studies: Music and Cultural Study in Cuba: This interdisciplinary program integrates classroom instruction with trips to cultural institutions and historic sites. It is open to college and university students, as well as to teachers who wish to earn CEUs. The curriculum will examine the music, culture and history of Cuba, with emphasis on the influence of the African Diaspora. Topics to covered include: cultural transference, language, religion, drumming and dancing. Offered during Cuba's renowned Carnival festivals, the program will take participants to Havanna, Matanzas and Santiago de Cuba (Havana, summer). University of Massachusetts Boston: Afro-Cuba Today: The Africana Studies Department of the University of Massachusetts Boston will offer a unique program to both graduate and undergraduate students who wish to study on location in Santiago de Cuba, Matanzas, Guantanamo and Havana, Cuba. The program is designed to facilitate an understanding of Cuba and Cubans of African descent through intense academic study. The program will explore the social history, politics, culture and economy of Cuba. Native Cuban scholars and practitioners from the University of Matanzas, the UNEAC and Casa del Caribe will conduct various lectures on Cuban society within its Afrocentric dimension.
