Archive of Terrorism and War E-mails from John McAuliff
After September 11th, I began posting to friends and colleagues articles I found especially meaningful to understand what was taking place in the US and the world, often with my own analytical comments or reflections appended. As the war against terrorism morphed into the war against Iraq, I expanded the list of recipients and increased the frequency of postings. The full collection can be accessed below. Since much of the material is copyrighted, please consider this a personal journal or notebook rather that a publication for further dissemination. I have not revised personal observations, even though they may have turned out to be wrong or muddle-headed.
I have to acknowledge a certain obsession with the crisis atmosphere since 9/11 and a diversion of intellectual resources and time from my professional work of fostering improved relations with Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Cuba (see www.ffrd.org). However, just as events in the US south and in Indochina reshaped my life in the 1960s, it seems impossible to completely escape the current sea change of America's role in the world. Philosophically, the following may make the connections clearer:
Guiding Principles of the Fund for Reconciliation and Development
War and the hostilities leading to and created by war are the greatest obstacle to the progress of humanity and an expression of our immaturity and imperfection. FRD believes that all people of the world are equally entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and that many paths lead toward that end, reflective of diverse histories, cultures, ethnicities, political systems and beliefs. Our attention as an organization is largely devoted to the post-conflict stage of human experience, in the recognition that failure to heal wounds, overcome misunderstandings, establish reconciliation, and pursue social, educational and economic development lays the ground for future conflict and impedes learning from the past. We survive and prosper together or we suffer and die together. In the 21st century no country, people or ethnic group can escape that reality.
